Software License Glossary

Common software terms are often used interchangeably even though they describe different things.

License

The grant of usage rights under the applicable terms. A license is not simply the code used to activate software.

Product key

A code used during setup or activation. A working key does not prove its channel, origin, transfer rights, or permitted device count.

Activation

The technical process that associates an entitlement or key with software, hardware, or an account. Successful activation does not replace the license terms.

Retail / FPP

A retail distribution channel. It must be supported by the exact supplier SKU and acquisition documentation.

OEM

A channel commonly associated with hardware or device-bound licensing. Rights depend on the actual terms and should not be inferred from a low price.

Volume licensing

Organization-focused licensing supplied under an applicable commercial agreement. MAK or KMS credentials must not be presented as normal consumer retail keys.

One-time purchase

A purchase for a defined product release. It does not mean lifetime support, all future versions, or permanent compatibility.

Subscription

Usage tied to a stated term, renewal, and service plan. Applications can enter reduced-functionality mode after expiry.
