Software Buying Guide

Use this checklist before comparing prices. The cheapest listing is not useful if the edition, platform, term, or activation market does not match your needs.

1. Define the use case

Identify whether the software is for personal use, home and school, professional work, a small business, or an organization-managed environment.

2. Choose the correct product family

  • Windows: operating system and device compatibility.
  • Office 2024: a specific one-time-purchase release and included desktop applications.
  • Microsoft 365: a subscription with plan-specific applications and services.

3. Compare the edition

Home, Pro, Home & Business, Personal, Family, Basic, Standard, and Premium are not interchangeable labels. Each edition changes the included features and intended scenario.

4. Verify the offer

Check license model, license channel, term, device or user count, language, region, delivery method, included items, and renewal behavior. Empty fields should be resolved before purchase.

5. Check compatibility

Compare the official system requirements with the exact device. Consider operating-system support lifecycle, processor eligibility, account requirements, and feature-specific prerequisites.

6. Review support and delivery

Understand who supplies the entitlement, how it is delivered, who supports activation issues, and what happens if the entitlement cannot be provisioned.
